The National Academies are an independent, nonprofit institution that conducts
nonpartisan, objective, expert-driven analyses on issues of science, technology, and public policy. The Institutes further the knowledge base of science and technology and the application of scientific and technical methods to the solution of public policy problems by providing commissioned, peer-reviewed, objective, evidence-based publications for the U.S. government, academic institutions, business, and the public. The Academy also engages the U.S. in international studies through its National Research Council, which provides science and technology based policy advice.
